Solutions…?

Updated: May 20, 2019

Scientists have considered innovative ways to cool down our planet... but at what must we sacrifice for that?

There are also alternative solutions to mitigate the effects of climate change. An article published by The Atlantic questioned whether or not we should “dim the sky” by creating artificial clouds. This could create a barrier between us and the sun, so more energy would be reflected, therefore, the Earth wouldn’t get warmer and would get a chance to cool.

At what extent must we sacrifice the life that we know in order to give the future generation an opportunity to exist?

This is a last-resort method, because “Stratospheric aerosols may cool the continents more than they cool the oceans, equalizing the normal pressure difference between land and sea—and, in turn, killing the seasonal monsoons of Asia and Africa. Food prices worldwide would skyrocket.” (Meyer, Robinson). At what extent must we sacrifice the life that we know in order to give the future generation an opportunity to exist? Carbon dioxide creates a greenhouse effect on the world and is unhealthy to breathe. Because of this, it’s essential to reduce our use of natural gases. There are several alternative solutions, but many are skeptical as to whether or not these methods help us more than hurt. Artificial clouds, laws on carbon dioxide use, new energy sources - these are all solutions… but which one will be the most beneficial? Additionally, a solution that impacts the planet on a global scale must be approved by the majority of countries. It will take time, patience, and a bit of luck for anything to pass globally. Because of this, we need to take action immediately at an individual level in order to achieve a large-scale effect. We must reduce our individual consumption in order to make a larger difference. There is no right answer when it comes to climate change, but every little thing matters. We still have some time to mitigate the impact of climate change; instead of preparing for our doom, we should, instead, find ways to weed ourselves off of fossil fuels. A graph created by NASA shows the spike in our carbon dioxide level over the past few years. (“Climate Change Evidence: How Do We Know?”). This just proves that we need to do something to mitigate climate change. Carbon dioxide creates a greenhouse effect on the world and is unhealthy to breathe. Because of this, it’s essential to reduce our use of natural gases.
